Tell us a bit about yourself:

  • Your educational background
    • Graduated Duke Class of 2022 with a major in Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering Certificate
    • Previously conducted research on: (1) dynamics of tensegrity structures and their potential application for post-disaster deployment, and (2) how to engineer a more sustainable material for the construction of the built environment (e.g. bioconcrete)
  • Any industry experience
    • Buro Happold: multi-disciplinary international firm of consultants and engineers
      • Scope of work: Performed structural design work on projects of varying sizes (canopies, bridges, resorts, etc.) while also working alongside their Sustainability Team, conducting LCA (life cycle assessment) and quantifying environmental impact through building materials
  • Why you're interested in this course
    • I’ve always been broadly interested in how sustainability can connect to the built environment, but have never had a formalized location or space to formulate my ideas with peers. I’m hoping I can learn a bit more about different ways to approach design within this course and how they can be used to inform my future thought processes on solutions to serve people.
  • Your goals for the course
    • I hope to come away from this quarter with a deeper empathy for the process of design as well as learn tangible methods to incorporate sustainability in all steps of the process.
