Part B - Preliminary Problem Statement

PROJECT WORKING TITLE: The handy memory extension.

  • [STUDENT] needs to [BEND DOWN UNCOMFORTABLY] because [HE WANTS TO OPEN A DOOR WITH HIS KEYCARD AND IS TOO COMFORTABLE TO DETACH IT FROM HIS NECK]
💡
Students on campus need to carry and access many things simultaneously. Over the course of a day, countless, energy costing hand movements accumulate. Therefore, there needs to be a simple and elegant way to carry small items like keys and cards that holds them very accessible but not burdensome.

I am a busy, new student at Stanford and have many things on my mind: classes, volleyball trainings, homework, dining hall hours, friends, networking events and the basic organization and planning of my life. This altogether can be quite overwhelming and I am scared to leave myself behind. Therefore, I am grateful for anything that eases my mind and frees me from little fears in the day to day.

  • [STUDENT] needs to [KEEP THEIR IMPORTANT BELONGINGS TOGETHER] because [SHE IS AFRAID TO FACE THE CONSEQUENCES OF LOSING THEM].

“If I am very honest, I am quite insecure teenager and deep down, I just want to belong. I want to be and stay socially connected but sometimes I can be a bit awkward. For example, my nervousness makes me a bit forgetful and clumsy - which is very embarassing at times. If there would only be something that helped me stay cool, calm and collected…”

  • [INSECURE TEENAGER] needs to [RELIEVE HIS NERVOUSNESS] because [IT IS MAKING HIM CLUMSY AND SOCIALLY EXCLUDED].

“I am the mom of a rather clumsy, forgetful teenager. The amount of times I had to demand new keys for our apartment because he lost them, or the times that he just forgot them at home… I am slowly getting impatient and annoyed of spending money on that or constantly reminding him to take ‘em with him.”

  • [MOM OF A FORGETFUL TEENAGER] needs to [REMIND HER SON TO TAKE AND KEEP HIS KEYS WITH HIM] because [HE IS CONSTANTLY FORGETTING OR LOSING THEM].

“Everything will work out and most things are out of your control anyways! Why rush and stress if you can sit and relax? Not a big sports fan but I love fantasy worlds and very much into anime! From the shows, to books, to fuzzy plushy characters on my backpack: I am a collector of these artifacts”

  • [ANIME LOVER] needs to [ATTACH HIS ANIME FIGURES TO HIS BACKPACK] because [HE LOVES TO BE WITH THEM AND SIGNAL HIS PASSION TO OTHERS].

Possible Questions:

  1. Are you a student?
  2. Do you - on average - change your location often within a day?
  3. What are the most important belongings that you usually carry with you?
  4. How do you carry them?
  5. Do you sometimes forget certain items?
