I sat on an outdoor bench to eat my lunch. because it was lunchtime, many people were trying to eat outside like me. The sun was so hot because it was about 1PM. I also found a tent with a parasol, sat down, and started eating sushi. As I ate lunch, I slowly observed other people. What caught my attention the most was the area where people sat. There were areas with trees, and areas without trees were divided. Naturally, there was a shadow in the area where the trees were located, and the table under the trees was full. Even people were around the trees, some of them could not avoid the sunlight. So there were parasols on the table to block sunshine. And I found something interesting. All the people sitting alone were sitting in the same direction to avoid the sunlight. And even at a table of 2-4 people, I could see them gathering under the shadows to avoid the sunlight as much as possible. Looking at myself, I was eating in a shaded spot. I thought. What if we could adjust the angle or length of the parasol easily? Wouldn't more people be able to avoid sunshine perfectly? As you all know, the sun keeps moving. So a parasol that can be moved and adjusted would be much more effective than a fixed parasol.
- Problem Statement
Everyone who uses the table uses only the shadowy part. This is thought to be a waste of space.
I observed people at a cafe on the second floor of the Stanford Bookstore. It had four beverage refrigerators. The door was made of glass so that I could see what the contents were inside. The drinks were grouped together and displayed in two rows and were placed inside a plastic rack. Perhaps because of the hot weather these days, many people need a lot of cold drinks, so the door to the refrigerator often opens and closes. I was surprised to see some people choose their drinks from the refrigerator. Considering the fact of the refrigerator door opening in the front, the drinks on display naturally feel cooler in the back than the drinks on the front(near the door). Also, people looking for drinks in the refrigerator want something cooler. So I saw some people reach inside the shelves to take out the drink which is far from the refrigeratorās door. In fact, it is very beneficial for consumers because they can drink cooler drinks for the same amount of money. But it is very inefficient in the environment. Because as the refrigerator door opens for a long time, the cold air in the refrigerator goes out. Then the temperature in the refrigerator rises, and the refrigerator consumes more power to lower the temperature again. Therefore, I want to make a tray in the refrigerator for consumers and the environment. It is a huge burden to the store owner to redesign the refrigerator. Therefore, I want to make a tray that can be installed in the existing refrigerator so that people can open the refrigerator door for a moment and get a cooler drink.
- Problem Statement
Waste unnecessary power to get cooler drinks.
I observed the bike storage. There were so many bicycles, and many students loved bicycles in the campus. But when I look closely, I can see that there were not only actual bicycles but also abandoned bicycles in the storage. They were all locked up, and I could even see rust and a lot of cobwebs. After the observation, I went around campus and saw many bike storage facilities, and there were so many abandoned bicycles, and there were so many that they were hideously dirty. The actions which I found is 'people are reluctant to store their bicycles around dirty and neglected bicycles'. Some people used bike lockers that were a far away from neglected bicycles, or just prevented them from stealing only with locks without using the storage. Not only does this cause a waste of space, but the abandoned bicycles remain ugly, unused by anyone. And that is so much bad for environment. So why can't the cleaning company collect the abandoned bicycles? What the abandoned bicycles have in common is that they are all locked with storage. In other words, they cannot be released unless the owner comes. So I want to make locks unravel by themselves over time, so that the cleaners can collect the bicycles.
- Problem Statement
Bike collection is not done properly because of locks. And the resulting environmental pollution
