Design Journal Entry - Module 12 Wrap Up

Overview

Key / Essential / Unique Design Features:

One of the standout features of my project is the modular hexagonal framework, which enhances structural stability while optimizing material use. This approach not only ensures efficiency but also allows for adaptable layouts.

To maximize natural light and ventilation, I incorporated expansive glass facades and open terraces, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. Additionally, I integrated a green roof to enhance insulation, manage stormwater, and contribute to the overall ecological footprint of the building. To further support sustainable energy goals, I placed solar panels strategically to harness renewable energy.

Another key challenge I tackled was system efficiency. The HVAC system was designed with a Variable Air Volume (VAV) system, radiant floor heating, and diffusers for cooling, ensuring efficient thermal comfort. Plumbing posed a unique challenge due to non-aligned washrooms across floors, which required independent piping systems that later merged into the underground sewer system.

My Big Successes:

One of my biggest successes in this project was seamlessly integrating sustainability into both design and function. The way the building leverages natural light and ventilation through passive strategies is something I’m particularly proud of, as it significantly reduces energy consumption.

Structurally, the hexagonal steel frame system worked exceptionally well, it allowed for a strong, versatile structure while also optimizing material use. Another key success was the power and lighting system, where I carefully analyzed illumination levels to ensure compliance with standards while maintaining energy efficiency.

Finally, tackling the challenges of plumbing and HVAC system integration and still ensuring smooth functionality was a major win. These aspects required careful planning, but the result was an efficient and well-coordinated system.

My Big Challenges:

One of the biggest challenges I faced was coordinating the different systems HVAC, plumbing, and electrical within a non-traditional modular design. The non-aligned washrooms were particularly difficult to manage because they required separate piping systems for each floor, which added complexity to the overall layout.

Another challenge was balancing aesthetics with functionality. While I wanted the structure to have an open, airy feel with extensive glass facades, I also had to consider solar heat gain and insulation. Incorporating vertical shading elements was one of the solutions, but it required careful placement to maintain the building’s energy efficiency.

Additionally, working within an urban environment like New York City presented its own challenges. Space constraints, environmental considerations, and regulatory requirements all needed to be factored into the design.

Looking back, I think I would have benefited from more early-stage simulations and iterative coordination between disciplines. This could have streamlined the integration process, especially for the plumbing and HVAC challenges.

Lessons Learned:

For students embarking on a similar project, I recommend watching the provided videos whenever you face challenges, as they offer valuable guidance. Focus on the small assignments and practice them thoroughly, as these exercises help build the essential skills needed for your main project.

Additionally, plan system coordination early, keeping HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems aligned will save time and prevent complications later. If I had centralized system-dependent areas like bathrooms and mechanical rooms, it would have simplified installation and design.

Lastly, start early and iterate, experiment with simpler models first before integrating complex systems into your main project. Challenges are part of the process, but with practice, planning, and continuous learning, you’ll be able to refine your vision effectively.
